Chennai, Jan 24 (): The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited (TASMAC), the retailers for liquor in the State has now ventured into the idea of Elite Liquor shops, exclusive outlets for Foreign Liquors.
Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) is now routed through TASMAC selling premium IMFL brands for beer, wine and foreign liquor items. At present, there are 6696 TASMAC outlets functioning in Tamil Nadu.
The fact that TASMAC contributes significantly to the state’s revenue and that there is unauthorized sale of foreign liquors across the state for higher prices has prompted TASMAC to directly import foreign liquors and market it in the state.
With this move from TASMAC, the good news for tipplers is that they will get the same liquors as available in foreign countries. TASMAC has also decided to sell these foreign liquors in exclusive outlets instead of selling it along with other Indian liquors. Initially, these outlets were named Elite shops, but they are now changed to Special TASMAC outlets.
Initially, there will be 45 special outlets across Tamil Nadu. These special outlets will be operational only across the districts of Chennai,Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur.
There is also a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in court against the opening of these special outlets in Tamil Nadu. A TASMAC officer said that the case will be over this week and by next week TASMAC will be able to open these much- awaited special outlets.
Liquors can be purchased using cash and credit cards. TASMAC will import around 300 brands of foreign liquor out of which 200 will be wine varieties. Leading brands of brandy, whisky, rum and gin would be made available.
While the existing TASMAC shop at Spencer Plaza would be converted into an elite shop, talks are on to open an outlet at the Express Avenue mall. The places where these shops are to come up include Arcot Road in Kodambakkam, Velachery, Chennai-Tirupati high road in Padi etc.
