Vijayawada, Jan 9 (): Telugu film actor, TDP party founder N T Rama Rao’s son and present TDP leader Nandamuri Balakrishna announced his decision to join politics on Sunday. He, however, is not categorical on whether he will contest in the by-elections or general elections scheduled in 2014.
Balaiah, as he is popularly known, announced that he would contest in the next elections, from any of the three regions that his party, the Telugu Desam, directs him to do so. Balakrishna reminded that he has been campaigning for the party during elections whenever asked to do so.
Balakrishna, who acted in several Telugu blockbusters in a career spanning three decades, had campaigned for the TDP when his father was at the helm, and even after Naidu took over the reins.
His latest film ‘Srirama Rajyam’, a mythological film based on Ramayana, was a big hit. N T Rama Rao was hugely popular for his mythological role of Rama, Krishna among others.
Balakrishna’s elder brother N Harikrishna is presently a TDP Rajya Sabha member. His daughter is married to Chandrababu’s son.
Balakrishna was in city on Saturday on his way to Ghantasala to unveil a statue of his father N.T. Rama Rao at 11.30 a.m. on Sunday. During his arrival here, he said: “There is no bar on NTR family members to play an active role in politics. Neither there is an opposition in the party.”
“Be it Telangana, Rayalaseema, or Andhra, I am ready to contest the elections from the constituency decided by the party high command.” The Congress government in Andhra Pradesh has failed to implement effective measures for people’s welfare, he charged.
When asked about the Telangana agitation, he said the party decision was his. Replying to another question, he said his son Mokshagna Rama Teja would enter the cine field after five years.
