Malda (West Bengal), Dec 25 (ANI): Negligence of hospital staff claimed the lives of three more infants admitted in a district hospital in West Bengal.
Till now, nine infants have succumbed due to the severe cold conditions in the past 32 hours totalling the death figures to 23 in the past three days.
The spine chilling cold in the remote areas like Harishchandrapur, Gajol and English Bazaar of the district has made life miserable for the villagers.
Parents and relatives of the dead infants, however, alleged negligence on the part of the hospital staff and said that the hospital had not done enough to save the infants.
“The baby had breathing problems. I brought it here for check up and they told me to get it admitted here. When I went to admit my baby they created confusions as to where I had got it treated in first place and they started to quarrel over the matter,” said Mariyam Bibi, a mother.
However, the hospital authorities claimed that they have been making every effort to save the lives of infants by arranging for room heaters in the emergency ward.
“We have arranged a room for the babies which were facing difficulties due to the cold. A plug point has been provided in the room, which was not there before. A heater has also been provided to ensure that the babies stay in proper health,” said Deputy Superintendent, Malda Medical College, R.R Samamta. (ANI)
