Lunch box bomb found in Madurai

Chennai, Dec 7 (): A lunch box filled with a bomb was kept in a Madurai-bound bus at Melur around 7 am, and since none came forward to claim it, the bus attendants threw it near the tank.

A local youth saw the box being thrown out of the bus and informed the police. The box has been seized and investigations are on, the police said, adding that the bus attendants are also being questioned.

Last month senior BJP L K Advani escaped an alleged attempt on his life in Madurai. A crude pipe bomb planted under a bridge in a village near Madurai in Tamil Nadu was detected after a tip off by a villager and defused.

The detection of the crude bomb on the route of Advani came as a major intelligence failure. This is the fourth incident of crude bomb being found in Madurai this year alone and fifth incident in the last two years.

The recent incident was on September 29 when a crude bomb was found planted inside a government bus. Even at that time the blast was averted as a state transport corporation employee spotted the explosive and informed the police. In May last a similar bomb exploded in a dust bin near the crowded Mattuthavani bus stand.

The terror plot was foiled by Tamil Nadu Police with the support of locals. S Fakrudeen alias ‘Police’ Fakrudeen and Bilal Mallik, close accomplices of Imam Ali, reportedly masterminded the terror plot.

Special teams were still searching for them. Fakrudeen, son of a retired police constable, was involved in a blast case at Ovamalai in Madurai District in 2002 and was also main accused in the sensational escape of Imam Ali from escort police at Tirumangalam, here on March 7, 2002 after a gun battle. Bilal Malik was one of the accused in the murder of Hindu Makkal Katchi Leader Kalidass five years ago.
