Mumbai, Dec 4 (): Vidya Balan’s excellent performance in ‘The Dirty Picture’ has received a positive response for the film makers and has managed to earn net Rs 20.32 crore till this weekend at the domestic box office since its release Friday.
Previously, The Dirty Picture has raked in Rs 10 crore at the collection centres on the opening day. On day two, Saturday, the film recorded a 13 per cent jump from Friday.
The Dirty Picture has opened to houses ranging from good to extraordinary. Considering the star cast of the film, the opening would be considered outstanding. The film is doing superbly well in single screen cinemas.
“The response is fantabulous. We are doing well in A, B, C centres. It’s holding on, it is not a one day wonder,” Girish Johar, head of acquisition and distribution, Balaji Motion Pictures, told IANS. “We released the film on 1766 screens, but the response is such that we are adding 30 to 40 screens. Even multiplexes are increasing the screening of the film,” he added.
The Dirty Picture, which stars Vidya Balan, Emraan Hashmi, Naseeruddin Shah and Tusshar Kapoor in leads, is a medium budget movie. Made at a budget of approximately Rs 18-20 crore with a marketing and print cost of other Rs 8-10 crore, Kapoor has covered a large part of her costs, having sold her film to distributors, Kundan Thadani’s AA Films for a reported Rs 19 crore.
With a satellite deal with Sony having netted Kapoor about Rs 8 crore — considered a decent sum for an A certified film —and another Rs 2 crore from music rights deal with T-Series, Balaji’s has gained beyond the box office.
Many entered the theatres with an excitement of seeing Vidya’s raunchy show, but they came out with a feeling of enlightment. Now, trade analysts say that the word of mouth is expected to boost the collection of The Dirty Picture.
