New Delhi, Nov 24 () : Both the Houses of Parliament were blocked today again by the Opposition and Congress MPs supporting Telangana . In the Lok Sabha, MPs from the Telangana region, including those from the Congress, rushed towards Speaker Meira Kumar’s podium and shouted slogans demanding separate statehood for the region. Some of them were carrying placards.
“Our demands are not illegal. Rules allow adjournment motions in both the Houses to pave way for discussion by voting. If the government doesn’t want discussion, it should be held responsible for the disruptions,” deputy leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha S S Ahluwalia said. The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till noon amid similar protests by opposition members.
“Who were the people who trooped into the well of the House? Congress members from Andhra Pradesh were there shouting slogans in favour of Telangana, while DMK members were also there waving copies of a vernacular daily,” added Ahluwalia.
Congress reached an agreement with Left parties that it would agree to a motion under Rule193 which does not need voting. Mukherjee met Sitaram Yechury and convinced him that anything which does not need voting was okay with UPA. Left Parties agreed to this and decided not to stall the proceedings since they are not ready for any mid-term elections.
BJP however is not ready to go back on the demand for adjournment and say that no one from Congress has approached them.“Nobody from the government has reached out to us on the issue. We are firm on going for adjournment motions,” said Ahluwalia.
