Chennai, Sept13 (): John Pandian, founder – president, Thamizhaga Munnetra Kazhagam and five of his supporters were released today . His arrest had sparked the Dalits to go on a rampage. Subsequent police firing resulted in death of seven persons. Southern districts were gripped by mob fury.John Pandian, addressing media persons at his residence in Palayamkottai, said, ‘the violence at Paramakudi was not a caste clash. It was instigated by a section of people’.
Pandian said that the Tuticorin Collector has issued orders that he must not enter Ramanathapuram. Pandian said that until he visited the affected villages and spoke to them he cannot get the full picture. Meanwhile his supporters who are lawyers also has moved the court to squash the Collector order. Pandian was kept in Vallanad police station in Tirunelveli.
Train services have been restored and residents of Parmakudi are solely dependent on this for transportation. Bus services are yet to be restored.50 pilgrims from Poosaripatti in Tiruchirappalli were returning after visiting Kanyakumari, Tiruchendur,and Rameswaram when their bus was attacked today. Those who were injured were treated as out-patients and discharged. The bus too was damaged.
Police today registered cases against 51 persons for allegedly poisoning a drinking water well at Pacheri where a dalit boy was murdered on September nine for allegedly having an illicit relationship with a local girl. An 18-year-old boy was charred to death in a mysterious fire that engulfed a petty shop at Ervadi around midnight last night. Police said it could be an accident as the shop owner was selling petrol. Seeman President of Naam Thamizhlar said that the police failed to tackle the situation and did not defuse it. He wondered as to how the dead persons got gun shots in the chest when the police are taught to fire only below the knee during a mob attack.
