Chennai, July 30, (): DMK strongman in Salem Veerapandi Arumugham who got bail for three land grabbing cases was taken in custody on another land grab case and sent to Coimbatore prison. Stalin and his supporters who went to pay condolences to the parents of the boy who dies in a bus accident in Tirvavur staged a road roko when cops tried to arrest a DMK functionary for the death of the boy. The police detained him with others.
Tiruvavur town shut down shutters and armed police pickets have been posted in Salem where scattered violence was reported. Police said a case had been registered against Kalaichelvan for allegedly preventing students of a school in Koradacheri, about 30 km from Tiruvarur, from attending their classes yesterday as part of DMK’s boycott call over uniform education system, now pending before Supreme Court.
As the students were returning home after being allegedly ‘forced out’ by the DMK men, a student died in a road accident involving the bus in which he was travelling.In a statement here, Karunanidhi recalled several incidents from the past and alleged that it was a typical trait of Jayalalithaa to “wreak vengeance”.
The arrest of the Kanchi Sankaracharyas, and the cases of narcotics possession against V N Sudhakaran and a former employee of the MGR memorial were cited as “instances of abuse of power” by Karunanidhi. He pointed to his own midnight arrest in 2001, besides those of former MP Tiruporur Parasuraman, veteran AIADMK functionary Tamaraikani and former MLA Purasai Renganathan.
