Chennai, Nov 2 (): At the inauguration function of Mother Teresa Women’s Complex to house the Women Self Help Groups, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said that it was only those who could not stand the growth of women in the power structure, would move to the court against the appointment of Letika Saran as the Director General of Police in the state. The reference was apparantly to DGP R. Nataraj moving the court against the government decision to elevate Ms Letika Saran as the DGP over him.
The Chief Minister also added that it was a matter for rejoicing that both the post of Chief Secretary and DGP were occupied by women.
He took it as DMK’s pride to introduce women in the police force. He reffered to Mr. F.V. Arul holding the Inspector General of Police earlier and now a woman holding the highest post in the department.
The legislation for providing equal share for women in family property and thirty per cent reservation in government jobs where also set into action during the DMKs rule. The thirty per cent reservation for women in local bodies had lead for 40,000 women becoming a part of local bodies – he added.
The Chief Minister recollected that when the Deputy Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin requested him to name the Rs 15.32 crore complex in Nungambakkam “Mother Teresa” was the first name to get into his mind and it was also coincidental that her centenary birthday was celebrated this year.
Union Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran said that the initiative for SHGs was sowed by his father Murasoli Maran and he was happy that it had grown so far, so well. He also added that the Tamil Nadu government and the Deputy Chief Minister deserve a noble prize for their contribution to the women’s development.
Mr.M. Subramaniam – Chennai Mayor, Ms. S. Malathi – Chief Secretary, Mr. K. Allaudin Raj – Rural Development and Panchayat Secretary and Dr K. Gopal – Managing Director of Corporation for Development of Women participated in the inauguration.
