Kofi Annan says Iran can help end Syrian crisis

Kofi Annan says Iran can help end Syrian crisis

Tehran, July 11 (TruthDive): Kofi Annan, U.N. special envoy said on Tuesday that “Iran can play a positive role” in terminating the bloody 17-month stand-off between the government of President Bashar al-Assad and Syrian rebels. He emphasized that Iran should be “the part of the solution in the Syrian crisis.”

In a news conference, U.N. secretary general discussed with the Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi that Iran, a stalwart ally of Assad’s, might help end the violence.

The UN’s special envoy said President Bashar Assad has agreed to a plan to suppress the bloodshed in the most violent areas of Syria and then expand the operation to the whole country.

He said his talks with Assad a day earlier focused on a new approach to ending the violence, which protesters say has killed more than 17,000 people since March 2011.

However, the Syrian opposition has said that any proposal to end the battle must start with Assad’s withdrawal, a precondition that Assad shows no sign of being willing to accept.

The Syrian crisis has resisted every international effort to bring peace, and still there was no sign that Annan plan described Tuesday will be a breakthrough. Although the Assad government’s crackdown has turned the Syrian president into an international pariah, he still has the support of strong supporters such as Iran, Russia and China.

Meantime, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security council, Saeed Jalili, cautioned against struggles by “foreigners” to interfere in the conflict, echoing repeated statements by Assad that the rebels have been organized and influenced by outside terrorist groups and enemies of the state.

Iran has supported Assad’s military in the recent years, providing advanced communications technology, weapons and advisers, according to the Associated Press. All of this makes Iran unlikely to support change in Syria.

Annan then visited Iraq and met Nouri al-Maliki, the Prime Minister of Iraq to discuss ways to end the bloodshed in Syria.
