World Cup 2015 : Dilshan and Sangakakkara demolish Bangladesh (Scorecard)

Feb 27 (TruthDive) : Sri Lanka walloped a hapless Bangladesh team by 92 runs in the 18th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia.

The match was lopsided from the very beginning as Bangladesh put up a below par show as they fumbled on the field, dropped catches, missed stumpings , gave away over throws and batted poorly which meant only one result, the opponent winning.

The Bangladesh team which was awarded the test status in 2000 is yet to come to grips with the international arena as their performance has always been a flash in the pan and never consistent. It was sad to see them play like amateurs as they lost the plot completely.

It all started in the very first over after Sri Lanka opted to bat first. Mortaza bowled two beautiful deliveries  to set the batsmen up and succeeded in having Thirimanne snick one towards slip, which was dropped by Bijoy in first slip after trying to grab the ball, thrice.

Before the end of the 10th over, Thirimanne had close to three close calls as edges fell short of fielders. On 43, Mushfiqur fluffed an easy stumping chance to make it Thirimanne’s lucky day. His luck soon ran out as he was out caught for 53. His was the only wicket to fall in the Sri Lankan innings as Sangakkara then joined with Dilshan to forge a 210 run partnership in 25.3 overs with both batsmen getting to their centuries.

Sangakkara, who always makes most of the first opportunity given, was given a life on 23 by Ahmed in his follow through. He had another life on 60 when Monimul put him down at point. If this was not enough, in the very next over Mushfiqur missed the second opportunity of the evening as he failed to even move to gather a ball when Dilshan was half way down the pitch just after he had reached his 21st century.

In the final over, Sangakkara registered his fastest century , fittingly in his 400th ODI in just 73 deliveries. Dilshan finished the innings on 161 with 22 boundaries but no sixes against his name, a record in an ODI, a feat which fetched him the man of the match award.

Bangladesh were in all sorts of trouble as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and slipped to 100 for 5 in the 20th over. Thanks to Shakibh Al Hasan’s 46 and Rahman’s 53, Bangladesh were able to get to a respectable score as they were finally dismissed for 240 in 47 overs.

Malinga was back in business as he dismissed Tamim Iqbal in the very first over and returned later to clean up the tail, which he does best, thus ending up with 3 wickets for 35 in his 9 overs.

If only they had taken their catches, done the stumpings, the result might have been different. It was not to be and Sri Lanka marched ahead with their 2nd victory in the tournament while Bangladesh was left to rue their missed opportunities.
