World Cup 2015: Afghanistan creates history (Scorecard)

Feb 27 (TruthDive) : It was a red letter day for Afghanistan as they won their first ever match in the World Cup tournament in only their third appearance, against Scotland, who are still searching for their first victory in the world stage in 11 appearances.

This was the closest finish in the World Cup 2015 as the match went in to the last over with all three results possible as Afghanistan needed 5 runs to win while Scotland required one wicket to seal their first victory. Afghanistan’s Zadran maintained his composure and got the much needed boundary on the 3rd delivery of the last over to seal victory and spark wide celebrations amongst the crowd and across his nation which has been deprived of such sparkling success.

This match was the first time that the 9th wicket partnership fetched more than 50 runs for both sides as the teams relied on the tail to rally them out of trouble.

Scotland were off to a sedate start scoring 38 runs in the first 10 overs for the loss of MacLeod for a duck in the 2nd. Coetzer and Gardiner fell in quick succession to leave them at 40/3 after which Machan and Mommsen added 53 runs. Zadran then struck with 2 quick wickets to reduce the Scots  to 144/8 with 13.2 overs still left.

Haq and Evans then added 62 invaluable runs, which almost took them home , for the 9th wicket and it was only in the last over of the innings, that the pair were separated.

With wicket stumbling regularly, the Scots were able to post only 210 on board and looked too small to defend. Shapoor Zadran was the pick of the bowlers with 4 wickets  for 38 runs while Dawlat Zadran ended up with 3 for 29.

The Afghanistan innings got off to a brisk start, thanks to Ahmadi who attacked the Scotland bowlers from the very outset. He scored a run a ball 51 and added 42 runs for the opening wicket in just 7.2 overs with Mangal.

All looked good for the Afghanis when Ahmadi and Shenwari were in the middle but with the introduction of Berrington, wickets started to tumble.  From a comfortable 85/2 in 18 overs, they were reduced to 97/7 in a space of 34 deliveries, with Berrington claiming 3 of those wickets and Davey accounting for the other two.

Zadran’s wicket with the score on 132 looked liked the end of the fight, but Shewari ensured there was still fight left in him as he added 60 runs for the 9th wicket. He scored a wonderful 96 runs, almost singlehandedly taking Afghanistan to their victory. With 19 still required, he held out to Davey off the bowling of Haq leaving the match delicately poised.

Hassan and Zadran kept their nerves as they knocked off the remaining runs with 3 balls to spare. The evening would be remembered for the never say die innings from Shewari and the fighting spirit of the Afghanistan team in general.
