CLT20 : KXIP start their campaign on a winning note (Scorecard)

Sep 20 () : Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), started their Champions League T20 (CLT20) campaign in style by defeating Hobart Hurricanes in their Group B encounter at Mohali.

Batting first on a two-paced pitch, the Hurricanes were happy that they did not have to face the fiery pace of Mithcell Johnson who was out due to a rib injury. Their happiness was short-lived; Thisara Perera bowled well to earn two wickets in his 3 overs giving away only 17 runs.

The start was very slow compared to T20 standards as the Hurricanes scored only 15 runs in the first 4 overs.  Akshar Patel gave the KXIP their first break-through by getting rid of Paine for 11 off 16 deliveries. Dunk hit back in the next over scoring 3 boundaries off the bowling of Awana helping the team score 30 in the power play overs.

The introduction of Perera in the 8th over yielded results immediately as Dunk, who by then had scored 26 off 24 deliveries, stepped out to hit him out of the park , only to be caught off Maxwell inside the boundary.

Wickets at regular intervals did not help Hurricane any better as they struggled to get a partnership going except for J Wells and Birt who added 52 runs for the 5th wicket in 5.2 overs. Kanveer Singh was the bowler to suffer most as he was hit for 2 sixes in a single over by Birt, ending with 37 runs off 3 overs.

The partnership helped the team put on 144 for 6 in the allotted overs, leaving KXIP, the team which chased three 190+ scores successfully in IPL 2014, to chase 145.

KXIP plans were disrupted as Sehwag was out for a golden duck off the first ball of the innings as he holed out to third man, chasing a wide delivery, as he usually does. With Saha and Miller following suit very soon, the team was at a precarious situation of 23/3.

Maxwell played freely scoring runs at will and at a strike rate of 172 as he did in IPL but his dismissal in the 11th over caused panic in the dressing room as the team was reduced to 77/5, still 68 away from victory in 9 overs.

Perera joined skipper Bailey in the middle scoring 37 of the 68 runs in just 19 deliveries with the help of 4 boundaries and a six which enabled Kings Xi Punjab to win the game with 5 wickets and 14 balls to spare.
