Sep 15 () : Mumbai Indians who lost their first match in the qualifiers stage of the Champions League T20 2014 against Lahore Lions on Saturday, came back strongly with a win over Southern Express.
The win helped them stay alive in the qualifiers as both their batting and bowling improved from the previous game.
Mumbai Indians won big with 22 balls to spare, thanks to the 139 run opening partnership in just 15 overs between Michael Hussey and Lendl Simmons. This helped them up the run rate and might prove vital in helping them qualify to the main draw.
The team playing back to back matches in two nights, did not let the previous night defeat hold them back. Pollard, the new skipper in absence of Rohit Sharma, got his decisions right as he inserted the opposition to bat and kept the scoring in check in the first half of the innings through some smart bowling changes.
Harbhajan Singh bowled in the power play and contained the batsmen as they scored only 9 on the first 3 overs. The scoring started picking up just after the power play with 12 coming off the 7th over bowled by Shreyas Gopal. The same bowler was hit for 2 sixes in the 12th over as the team inched towards the run rate of 7.
The Southern Express team reached a competitive 161, thanks to the late hitting by Farvez Mahroof who scored 41 off just 22 deliveries.
Hussey and Lendl started cautiously as they scored only 39 off the first 6 overs, but ensured there were no wickets lost. As they got used to the bowling, they started being a little more aggressive and kicked up the run rate. Hussey , who was scoring a run a ball by the 10th over, hit 2 sixes and a boundary in 3 deliveries, which helped increasing the run rate and reducing the required rate to 70 off 54 deliveries.
Hussey was the only man dismissed in the Mumbai Indian innings as both the opening batsmen scored a well deserved 50.
