English Vinglish was released on 28th June in 33 screens across Japan and it has become the second biggest Bollywood film in Japan after Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots.
English Vinglish, directed by Gauri Shinde, tells a touching story of a home-bound woman who does not know English, but a trip to US helps her to bring out the best in her.
The touching tale created a lot of buzz in Japan last year itself, when the director of English Vinglish, Gauri Shinde was called to Japan in August 2013 to attend the Aichi International Women’s Film Festival for the screening of English Vinglish.
The grand opening of the movie was held on the 27th of May this year in Tokyo and premiere was attended by the lead lady of the film, Sridevi along with the famous singer of Japan, Agnes Chan and the First lady of Japan, Akie Abe.
Gauri Shinde was overwhelmed to witness the awesome response to the film during the promotions of the film in Tokyo last year.
The Japanese cinema market has proven to be a strong one for Indian cinema already. Especially, the Eros International Media Ltd. has released Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om in 2013 in 14 screens across the country. Om Shanti Om earned over $150,000 at the Japanese box office. The same banner had released movies like Chalo Dilli, Student of the Year and Agent Vinod in Japan.
