DMK heading for a revolt against Stalin

Chennai, June 23 (): DMK post poll is heading for an inner revolt by those who are placed under suspension.

Stalin who managed to sideline Alagiri and did so with Kanimozhi is now brought in a purge of leaders who are loyal to his father Karunanidhi. This is under the cover of punishing leaders who were responsible for DMK rout in Lok Sabha poll.

Stalin claims that an internal report on DMK debacle identified these office bearers who did not work for the candidates. Those in the know say that Stalin has left out those who are loyal to him and suspended those who still swear by his father.

Durai Murugan, Kushboo (who quit DMK), Kanimozhi and S S Palanimanickam were on the hit list. Kushboo quit before she was sidelined and Durai Murugan has more or less kept off decision-making and Palanimanickam has been suspended.

Those who are elevated are K N Nehru, I Periysamy and Ponmudi. Parapatti Suresh who is a leader in Salem and related to Veerpandi Arumugham was suspended to pave way for Stalin loyalist to take over the district unit.

Palanimanickam was suspended for being responsible for TR Baalu’s defeat in Thanjavur. Kushboo did the unthinkable by saying till Karunanidhi is alive nobody can lead DMK. Palanimanickam at Coimbatore party conference uttered the same.

Insiders say that NKKP Raja who was in charge of Erode is not suspended though DMK was routed. Similarly, Suresh Rajan ex-MLA of Nagercoil saw to it that sitting MP Davidson was not re-nominated. He got his nominee Rajarathnam the Kanyakumari seat and swore that if DMK did not win, he would quit. DMK was pushed to third place. Rajan still continues to be in the favourite list.

Sources say Karunanidhi got the first shock when he saw the candidate list and next was the list of suspended office bearers. He could do nothing for his daughter Kanimozhi who was given nondescript places to campaign and DMK party cadres sensing that she is out of favour did nothing much for the meeting engagements.

It was Stalin’s idea that one need not have any alliance with Congress and contested in 35 seats. His solo campaign according to him was to turn the tide and followed the Jayalalithaa model.

A party like DMK has never been driven by a single leader and the candidate and local strongmen in the district have played a role in poll victory. This proved that Stalin is no Jayalalithaa. The suspended office bearers might move towards Alagiri or towards AIADMK.
