May 22(): Mumbai Indians(MI) defeated table toppers Kings XI Punjab(KXIP) for the second time in IPL 7.
Mumbai Indians won the toss and knowing the prowess of the KXIP during chases, elected to field. This season, the run rate for KXIP while batting chasing is 11 and the same gets reduced by 2 runs to 9 rpo while batting first.
Miller was rested for the match and in his place, one of the most consistent batsmen in all IPL, Shaun Marsh was drafted in, finally. Sehwag, as usual started with a boundary off the first ball of the innings and went one step ahead this time by hitting the second for a six over extra cover. His innings was cut short as he was run out when the ball ricocheted off Vohra’s foot and ended up with the bowler.
Vohra(36 off 34 ) in the company of Marsh (30 off 17 ) added 64 runs for the second wicket. While Vohra was not going ballistic as in the last 2 games, he was still scoring more than run a ball, while Marsh was playing his shots. At the half way stage the team had 90 on board with Maxwell and Vohra in the middle and the signs looked ominous for a big score.
Gopal and Ojha who were carted around for 51 runs in 4 overs, came back strongly. Gopal bowling the 11th over, accounted for Vohra and the dangerous Maxwell caught off his own bowling for 2. This double blow helped MI fight back as in the 4 overs, from 11 to 14, bowled by the same bowlers, only 14 runs were scored. The wicket of Saha in the 15th over only made matters more difficult for KXIP.
The captain, Bailey, helped KXIP to a respectable score with 39 off 30 balls, but he would have been sure the score of 156 was never going to be easy to defend.
MI took 11 games before having the first 50+ partnership in the last game and they repeated it again. Simmons, normally starts slow, but in this match he was in an attacking mood. The first over from Sandeep Sharma yielded 13 runs with 3 boundaries. The 50 partnership was achieved in the 5th over with Hussey contributing only 2 of those. Such was the dominance of Simmons that when the 68 run partnership ended, Hussey had scored only 6.
Rayudu, Rohit and Pollard played around Simmons while he kept going about his business. He hit 14 boundaries during his stay indicating his determination to play along the ground and just hit 2 sixes. He slowed down before his century scoring 8 off his last 10 balls. The first century of IPL 7 was then finally achieved by him in 61 balls in the 19th over and Pollard wasted no time by sending the very next delivery over long on to not only bring victory but also to keep MI’s hopes alive of qualifying for the play offs.
