IPL 7 (May 12 Result) : Mumbai Indians keep their hopes alive with a win (Points Table)

May 13 () : Mumbai Indians (MI) won their must-win game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 7 wickets and kept their hopes alive to qualify for the play-offs.

Winning the toss, Sunrisers Hyderabad opted to bat but lost their skipper Shikar Dhawan for 11 in the 5th over. Finch who has had a mediocre IPL 7, played himself in and scored 68 off 62 balls studded with 7 boundaries and 2 sixes. The middle overs did not yield much, as both Bumrah and Harbhajan bowled tightly giving away only 24 and 27 runs respectively from their quota of 4 overs.

It was only due to some late order hitting by Warner, especially in the last 2 overs that yielded 33 runs, SRH were able to post 157. Warner hit 2 sixes over long-on in the 19th over bowled by Malinga scoring 15 off the over and both Ojha and Warner scored 18 of the last over bowled by Pollard. Malinga was the only wicket taker for Mumbai Indians with 2 for 35 in his 4 overs.

With 158 required, Mumbai Indians started poorly yet again. Gautham was out in the second over of the innings bowled by Bhuvanesh Kumar for one caught by Dhawan. Rayadu and Simmons, who has replaced Hussey in the playing 11, forged a match-winning partnership there forth.

Simmons (68 off 50 balls – 5 Fours and 4 Sixes) started off slowly and at a point was at 7 runs off 14 balls. The 5th over bowled by Irfan Pathan changed things. Simmons hit him for a six over mid-wicket in the second ball and when Pathan bowled the next ball fuller, drove him past mid-off for a boundary. Charging down the pitch in the last ball of the over, Simmons hit a six over long on with the fielder there being a mere spectator. The over yielded 16 runs and Mumbai had doubled their score in a single over.

Pathan returned for his second over by bowling the 12th over of the innings only to give away 13 runs, this time Rayudu (68 off 46 balls – 7 Fours, 2 Sixes) hitting him for a six and a boundary. Pathan ended the match with 29 runs off two overs while Amit Mishra went for 33 from 3 overs, an economy rate of 11. Bhuvanesh Kumar was the pick of the bowlers accounting for 2 wickets and giving away only 21 runs in his 4 overs.

Simmons and Rayudu were dismissed in a span of 6 deliveries but Rohit Sharma and Pollard ensured the team did not throw away the winning opportunity and took the team across the line in the 19th over with 8 balls to spare. Rayudu was rightly named the man of the match for his winning contribution with the bat and helped his team keep their hopes alive for qualifying.
