Chennai, Jan 11 (): The 37th edition of the Chennai Book Fair has been inaugurated on January 10 at the YMCA College of Physical Education, Nandanam. It will be held for 12 days till January 22, 2014.
The book fair has been organised by the Booksellers and Publishers Association of South India (BAPASI). This year’s fair will have more than five lakh books in Tamil and English in 777 stalls. About 10 lakh visitors are expected this year by the organisers. Tickets are priced at 10 and free entry for children below 12 years. Apart from this, a total of 7 lakh free tickets will be issued to school students, said Meenakshi Somasundaram, the president of BAPASI.
A discount of 10% on all books has been announced by the organizers. On weekdays, the fair will be open from 2pm to 9pm and from 11am to 9pm during weekends.
A special mobile phone app has been developed for both Android and Apple phones to guide visitors to find out their favourite book stalls in the maze of 700-odd stalls, titles carried by various publishers, location of the stalls and inform them about daily programmes.
For the benefit of the visitors, the organisers have arranged for facilities such as free pick-ups and drops at the entrance of the venue, a food court, drinking water, a resting area, ATM machines, wheelchairs and ambulance services. Ten ‘Namma’ autorickshaws will be available at the venue for the benefit of visitors.
Drawing and elocution competitions are also conducted for the students. A blood donation camp has also been organised.
New book launches and interesting lectures by well-known personalities will also be held daily between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Everyday programmes and the following day’s programmes are being informed to the visitors well in advance through text messages.
