Chennai, Nov 25 (): Arya-Anushka’s “Irandam Ulagam” that opened in screens on November 22, has made a good start at the Chennai box office, trade expert Sreedhar Pillai says. The Telugu version titled “Varna” also had a decent opening on the first day of its release.
The most anticipated movie of director Selvaraghavan has topped the Chennai box office chart, pushing “Arrambam” to the second spot, said senior film journalist Sreedhar Pillai.
Trade analyst and film enthusiast Sreedhar Pillai tweeted, “Chennai Box-Office – Nov 22 to 24 – No. 5 – Pizza 2 : Villa. No. 4 Ram Leela. No.3 Pandiya Nadu. No.2 Aarambam . No.1 Irandam Ulagam”.
Irandam Ulagam also had a decent opening weekend in Andhra Pradesh and the movie has taken the top slot at the box office, dominating over “Masala”, “Ram-Leela and “Pizza 2:Villa”.
The film opened with a lot of expectations, as Selvaraghavan’s much-awaited fantasy thriller ‘Irandam Ulagam’ had been in the making for over two years. The director is known for his unique story-telling in his projects. He had been appreciated for making romantic films such as “Kadhal Kondein”, “7G Rainbow Colony” and “Mayakkam Enna” in the past and now he has once again come out with a love saga – “Irandam Ulagam”.
So far, all his love stories have been received well by the audiences and have been praised for maintaining the realism in their depiction. However, in ‘Irandam Ulagam’, he creates two extremely opposite characters played by Arya and Anushka. Selva complicates a simple love story in his attempt to merge romance and fantasy types, to give the audience an awful experience.
It looks like the director got lost between the two worlds he has tried to bring out to the audience and the not so clean post-production work has just missed to bring out the film cause.
Even though the film received average reviews from critics, Irandam Ulagam has topped the Chennai box office charts. But, the negative reviews and negative word of mouth might affect the business of “Irandam Ulagam” in the coming days.
