Box office collection : Ram Leela collects 16 crore on opening (first) day

Mumbai, Nov 16 (): Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s latest offering “Ram Leela” starring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles has garnered Rs 16 crore at the domestic box office on the opening day, in spite of the cancellation of shows in several theatres due to protests over its title and content.

Trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh tweeted, “#RamLeela Fri Rs 15.25 cr and counting. Some cinemas were closed and shows at few cinemas were disturbed and suspended due to protests. #RamLeela *revised* Fri Rs 16 cr”.

He also tweeted, “#RamLeela is 5th biggest opener of 2013… Deepika’s 3rd biggest opener… Ranveer’s biggest opener!”

“Ram-Leela” was released on Friday (November 15) in nearly 3,000 screens in India and 500 screens abroad. Ram-Leela has opened very well at the domestic box office. Despite the initial anxieties, the film has managed to attract the audiences.

The romantic-drama is the biggest opener for director Bhansali as director. “Rowdy Rathore”, starring Akshay Kumar earned him Rs 15.10 crore on the opening day, but he was only the producer of the film.

For Ranveer who has just done four films earlier has Ram-Leela at the top of the chart, with Rs. 16 crores being his highest opening film ever.

On the other hand, Deepika’s chart features the film at number three, following her previous releases of this year, namely Chennai Express and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

The advance booking for the film was affected due to the legal issues and doubt over its release. In spite of it, the opening has been very good, while the current bookings are receiving ample footfalls to guarantee a strong collection in the coming days. The business on Saturday and Sunday is expected to get bigger, since the word of mouth and reviews have been marvellous.
