The previous highest seventh-wicket partnership by Indians was 259 runs scored by MS Dhoni and VVS Laxman against South Africa at the same venue. Three of the five records have been registered at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

Denis Atkinson and Clairmonte Depeiaza hold the record of the highest seventh wicket partnership in Tests.

Even though, the Eden Gardens was left dejected yesterday as Sachin Tendulkar departed, India found new hero in Rohit Sharma, who scored a century on debut and carried India to 354 for six at stumps for a lead of 120 runs, by the end of the second day.

Rohit Sharma did a good job, hitting the ball on the third day across the ground with his bat and crossed the 150 runs mark. Indian batsman Rohit said his source of inspiration has been former Australian run-machine Mike Hussey, who had played his first game in the five-day format aged 30.

Rohit stamped an unbeaten 127, at the end of the second day, on debut as India improved from a top-order flop to take a firm grip of the first Test against the West Indies with a 120-run first-innings lead at the Eden Gardens.

Ravichandran Ashwin hit his second Test century today, he scored his ton off 159 balls. Both his centuries have come while batting at No 8. His yesterday’s innings was mature and very productive. He accompanied Rohit with a shot here and there but generally stuck to his job of diminishing the bowling.
