New Delhi, Nov 6 (): BJP and Congress government are now feuding over Narendra Modi’s security.
The BJP wants Modi, who is running for Prime Minister, to have SPG protection accorded to PM and Gandhi family.
Minister of State for Home RPN Singh told BJP that when Congress was in the opposition and the BJP-led NDA in power, Rajiv Gandhi was not even provided a sub-inspector and that was why he lost his life. The BJP was in power when Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in 1991. Home Minister Shinde too ruled out any SPG cover.
Last month, bomb blasts took place at the rally held by Modi in Patna. Six people were dead and 83 injured in the explosions which took place before Modi arrived to address tens of thousands of BJP supporters. After the blast, Modi was guarded by NSG, the Gujarat Police and the State Police when he addressed a rally in other States. NSG (National Security Guard) commandos are given to chief ministers like J Jayalalithaa and Assam CM.
After the Patna blasts, the BJP said that Modi’s security cover should be upgraded and should be guarded by the elite Special Protection Group. It has left it to the Home Ministry to do the necessary. The BJP has asked State units to form their own bodyguards for Modi when he visits them.
Central intelligence agencies say that different groups like IM and pro-Khalistan were out to target him, and therefore any state visited by Modi for election rallies should be on high alert and should be given maximum security.
After the bomb blasts in Patna, the Centre Home Ministry decided that Modi’s security will be closely monitored by central intelligence agencies, the Gujarat State Police and 100 National Security Guard commandos who travel with him, and the police of the state government that is hosting him. The ASL (Advanced Security Liaison) is similar to the PM’s security.
