Mars Orbiter Mission, Mangalyan launch on Nov 5 : ISRO

Bangalore, Oct 25 (TruthDive): India will launch its first interplanetary probe, Mars orbiter spacecraft, Mangalyan, at 2.36 pm on November 5 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, ISRO said on Tuesday.

The launch of The Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), ‘Mangalyan’ satellite, which was scheduled for October 28 in the beginning, was postponed due to bad weather in the Pacific Ocean. This will be the first ever launch that ISRO will schedule in November at India’s space port, which is usually punctuated with frequent cyclones at this time of the year.

This mission is India’s ambitious Rs.450 crore space mission to Mars said ISRO, top Indian space agency. The heat shield of the rocket (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle-PSLV) has been closed and the final electrical checks will be carried out Wednesday, K. Radhakrishnan, chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) told.

The two ships SCI Yamuna and Nalanda, which were carrying rocket tracking systems and delayed due to bad weather, have now reached their destination in the Pacific. The two ships left from Visakhapatnam to the South Pacific Ocean in mid-September.

The Indian ships will monitor the health of the rocket and satellite as it sails over the ocean after being launched from India.

The primary aims of the mission are to establish India’s technological capability to send a satellite to orbit around Mars and conduct meaningful experiments such as looking for signs of life, take pictures of the red planet and study Martian environment. Further, the Mangalyan mission will study the Martian atmosphere.

The spacecraft is planned to enter a 372 km by 80,000 km elliptical orbit around Mars. The American NASA/JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) is also offering communications and navigation support to this mission with their deep space network facilities.

The Mars Orbiter Mission is part of scientific and planetary exploration of India, along with Chandrayaan, Astrosat, etc.
