Srinagar, Sep 23 (): A jawan of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) was shot dead and another injured in a militant attack in the heart of Srinagar city today after some unidentified gunmen opened fire near the Naaz cinema building in Iqbal Park area of the city in the busy market area.
A search operation to locate the terrorists is in progress by the police who cordoned off the area after the incident on Monday morning. Police are on a massive hunt to nab the militants who opened fire on the Jawans who could not hit back all of a sudden, said Aashiq Bukhari,SSP Srinagar.
Firing started at 10:30 am on Monday, added the officer. As soon as firing took place in the busy market area today morning, shopkeepers and pedestrians ran in panic in the area.
The CISF personnel were positioned at a power transmission station in Waghoora in Badgam.
The incident reportedly occurred when CISF troopers were buying vegetables outside the Naaz cinema building situated near the centre Lal Chowk area, said the police.
Another jawan of the CISF who received bullet injuries is under treatment after militants fired at the CISF personnel from a point blank range on Monday. Police rushed the injured personnel to hospital immediately. Senior police and paramilitary officials reached the spot immediately and launched a massive hunt to track the militants group.
Officials said that though violence in Kashmir has decreased than earlier, the cause of the attack is yet to be identified. Fresh spate of violence triggered in the valley after Afzal Guru the man found guilty of plotting the 2001 attack on the parliament was hanged a few months back.
Earlier, two armed militants pretending as cricket players attacked a paramilitary camp in which five people were killed. The militants were later arrested and penalized for their act.
