Mumbai, Sep 10 (): Ram Charan Teja’s debut Bollywood film “Zanjeer” has turned out to be a failure at the Indian box office. The movie has collected Rs 12.17 cr in four days.
Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “#Zanjeer *Hindi version* Fri 3.58 cr, Sat 2.89 cr, Sun 3.69 cr, Mon 2.01 cr. Total: Rs 12.17 cr nett.”
The weekend breakdown of Zanjeer is as follows – “#Zanjeer *Hindi version – revised* Fri 3.58 cr, Sat 2.89 cr, Sun 3.69 cr. Total: 10.16 cr nett. DISASTER!”
“Zanjeer” started slowly at box office on Friday collecting only 3.58 crore and the collections decreased in the next two days too. The collections on Saturday dipped to 2.89 crore and on Sunday, the movie collected 3.69 crore. Film dropped by less than 40% and managed to collect only 2.o1 cr nett on day 4.
Trade experts say the film is a disaster and will incur huge losses for makers. By collecting just 12 cr nett in four days, the film is expected to collect only 16 cr net in its first week. Even pocketing a 20 cr nett lifetime total looks a tough task for the film. Telugu version of the film, Toofan is also falling with each passing day. Zanjeer is also a disaster in overseas market.
“Zanjeer” was also a huge disaster on the overseas front as well. Taran tweeted, “#Zanjeer is a washout in U.S.A.-Canada, U.A.E.-G.C.C. and Australia. The *opening weekend total* is $ 491,546 [Rs. 3.20 crores]”.
Zanjeer is the remake of Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan’s 1973 blockbuster movie of the same name. The original film, which became a cult classic, had taken its lifetime collection to around Rs 6 crore. It became the fourth highest grosser in 1973. But the remake has turned out to a flop.
Indian Express film critic Subhra Gupta in her review said that Zanjeer is ‘neither faithful remake nor campy, knowing tribute. It’s just a poor copy.’ So why remake the original?
