Jodhpur, Sep 2 (): Rajasthan police might likely seek further custody of the controversial self-styled god-man Asaram Bapu, who was arrested on late Saturday night from his Indore Ashram.
Asaram Bapu who was subjected to a “potency test”, on Sunday led to the confirmation that his libido is active and he is strong enough to commit the crime of sexual assault and rape on the 16-year-old girl, said Jodhpur commissioner of police Biju Gorge Joseph.
Police said that after Asaram was made to take the test he urged the police that he is weak and incapable of committing the crime he was charged with. Officials claimed that potency test was the “normal procedure” which proves whether the offender is capable of committing the crime or not. After questioning the spiritual guru for four hours at RAC headquarters, he was produced in a court which sent him to one day custody, said the Commissioner.
The officer further said that they pleaded the court for two-day police remand of Asaram but the district sessions judge Manoj Kumar Vyas permitted only one day custody. A physical verification was also conducted on the self-styled godman, said officials adding that preliminary interrogation has been finished and few more facts have to be verified before coming to a conclusion. Police also claimed that Asaram had not yet produced any concrete evidence in his defence.
Meanwhile, reports said that followers of Asaram Bapu were arrested in Delhi after they assembled outside the Delhi airport protesting the arrest of their guru and some were arrested in Mumbai after they blocked local trains at Ulhasnagar station in Mumbai.
Asaram Bapu who is in police custody was questioned extensively during the remand period and was also checked by a medical team, said Police Commissioner Joseph. The officer also said that efforts have been made to avoid any untoward incident as supporters of Asaram gathered in large numbers outside the police station.
