Eid Al Fitr 2013 : Pakistan, India, Bangladesh celebrate on August 9

Aug 9 (TruthDive): Eid Al Fitr is celebrated on August 9 in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh as Shawwal moon has been sighted. Eid marks the end of holy month of Ramadan for Muslims worldwide. The festival is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic lunar calendar.

Chairman Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Mufti Muneebur Rehman announced on Thursday that the Shawwal moon had been sighted across the country.

Addressing a press conference, Rehman said that evidences of the moon being sighted were received from Islamabad, Mazaffargarh, Jhang, Jacobabad, Sanghar, Okara, Bunair, Swat, Zhob and Badin.

The official announcement of the Shawwal moon’s sighting was made after consulting all the committees.

The meeting of the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee was attended by Mufti Ibrahim Qadri, Qari Hanif Jalandhari, Maulana Asad Deobandi, Pir Syed Ali Shah Jilani, Hafiz Mohammad Salafi, Mufti Abdul Sattar Haqqani, Maulana Sabir Noorani, Maulana Syed Sabir Hasan, Allama Ali Qarar Naqvi and Maulani Ferozuddin Rabbani.

In India, the announcement about the moon sighting came after a meeting of Qadeem Royat Hilal Committee, on Thursday, headed by Maulana Mufti Mohammed Mukkaram, Shahi Imam of Fatehpuri Masjid.

The head said the Eid moon has been sighted on Thursday in various places across the country. Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated in India on Friday.

India and Pakistan celebrate Eid one day after Saudi Arabia. But, Muslims in the Indian southern state of Kerala follow Saudi Arabia mainly because of their strong employment and cultural links to the country.

This year, Ramadan in India has started a day after the Middle East because the monsoon clouds made the new moon hard to spot.

In Bangladesh, the National Moon-Sighting Committee confirmed the viewing of the crescent in the skies on Thursday. State Minister for Religious Affairs Shahjahan Miah, chief of the National Moon Sighting Committee, announced around 7:15pm that Friday would be the first day of Eid.

Qatar, Jordan, Egypt, Yemen, Libya and the United Arab Emirates celebrated Eid on Thursday.
