The Hindu Tamil newspaper gets an Editor

Chennai, July7 (TruthDive): The Hindu is giving final shape to the Tamil newspaper it would launch on Diwali day. The publishers Kasturi & Sons Ltd (KSL), has appointed Ananda Vikatans publisher Asokan as the editor.

Asokan was the editor of the Ananda Vikatan and was connected with the publishing house for 26 years. N Ram confirmed this appointment to a Financial daily. The earlier title was Kamadhenu but it is not going to be. The long years of his service in the Vikatan group and the pivotal force behind the seven magazines that bring Rs125 crores. The lookout for Tamil journalists who have been trained in Tamil news. Asokan joined Vikatan as a student and went on to be executive editor.

The Tamil newspaper would be a different experience altogether. It has to take on the Dina Thanthi the market leader which has been holding sway and faces little competition. It was given a fight by DinaMalar in many Southern districts. The market forces changed when the Marans bought Dinakaran group publications. It took the Times of India way by selling a copy for Rs2 and loaded with free supplements and more colour pages. This created a dent and became the second most read paper.

Dinamalar was then divided with various editions. Dinamani remained the fourth popular paper. The Tamil newspaper runs on sensational news, an area which the The Hindu stays away. It has to be seen whether a separate editorial policy would be followed by the Tamil newspaper.

Critics point out that Asokan who is at home with magazine journalism might find the daily beat a tough ball game. The straying to TV news channel with NDTV as partner cost The Hindu heavily.

From an English news channel it slipped to a Tamil one and finally it changed hands. Business wise it makes sense as regional newspaper industry is growing and is at Rs2970 crore revenue expected to touch Rs4630 crore in three years. Tamil newspapers sell 25% more than English newspapers in Tamil Nadu. It depends on advertisement revenue and only 25% money comes from circulation.
