Dharmapuri/Chennai, July 5 (TruthDive): Ilavarasan-Divya marriage punctuated with caste tensions, loss of lives and property amid high drama came to a tragic end when the young Dalit boy Ilavarasan was found dead near a railway track in Dharmapuri Thursday afternoon.
Ilavarasan’s body was found near the track behind the Dharmapuri Government Arts College. Ilavarasan was believed to have jumped before an Express train bound for Mumbai from Coimbatore.
Police sources said the youth was believed to have come to the spot around 12.30 p.m. on a motorcycle and spent some time near the railway track. It was claimed that the young man jumped before the train between 1 p.m. and 1.30 p.m. Eyewitnesses said he had succumbed to a fatal head injury.
Divya, a Vanniyar girl from Dharmapuri and Ilavarasan, a Dalit youth from Naikkankottai village from the same district got married last year. Caste hegemony surfaced and their marriage sparked off caste tensions in the district last year. Insulted by his community members for letting his daughter marry a Dalit lad, Divya’s father committed suicide last November.
Following his death, houses were ransacked and set on fire in Natham, Anna Nagar and Kondampatti Colonies in Naikkankottai village in 2012. Divya left Ilavarasan earlier this month following caste tensions that triggered between her Vanniyar community and Dalits.
Earlier,Divya had told reporters in the Madras High Court campus that she would stay with her mother until their inter-caste marriage gains acceptance from her community people. In an unexpected U-turn, a couple of days later, Divya said on Wednesday that she would never return to her husband and would stay with her mother only.
Ilavarasan’s death came a day after his wife Divya firmly disowned her marriage and ruled out returning to him. Her outright denial of Ilavarasan has pushed him to kill himself out of dejection, say reports.
Though no suicide note was found at the spot where he is believed to have killed himself, a bag found near the body had three letters Ilavarasan had exchanged with Divya in 2011.
Earlier this year,Ilavarasan still hanging on to his hopes stated that they led a happy life and that he hoped Divya would return back to him soon.
Meanwhile, the body of Ilavarasan had been shifted to Government Dharmapuri Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.
Special police battalions had been posted in sensitive areas like Dharmapuri, Viluppuram, Cuddalore and Tiruvannamalai districts.
On the other side in Chennai, demanding a judicial probe and seeking protection for Divya and her family, Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front (TNUEF) members have called upon all democratic forces to join their Road Roko at Mylapore, Chennai today,5th July.
