Online Passport service fee comes into effect from June 14

Chennai, June 14 (): So far passport applicants who have been paying the prescribed passport service fee at the Passport Seva Kendras (PSK) at the time of their personal appearance are hereafter required to pay the passport service fee online at the time of booking appointments at the PSKs for personal appearance in Tiruchi and Thanjavur.

Intending for an enhanced operation of the processing capacity of the PSKs, the new system has been introduced by the Ministry of External Affairs as  a substantial number of applicants who book appointments online fail to turn up at the scheduled time and date, said K Balamurugan Regional Passport Officer.

According to the PSKs’ analysis, previous record proves that there were many applicants who were not turning up after taking appointment through the online system of filing passport applications. Out of 350 appointments provided for personal appearance of the applicants at the Tiruchi PSK on a day, only 250 applicants turn up, which has resulted in lesser utilization of processing capacity of the PSK besides upsetting reliable applicants who were denied appointment slot, said the RPO.

The Ministry therefore has initiated the online payment system at the time of booking appointments, in order to resolve the crisis, said Balamurugan.

Applicants who had already taken appointments can make an appearance at their scheduled appointment slot and can remit the fee at the PSKs, said Mr Balamurugan adding that applicants who are qualified for walk-in interviews such as tatkal, government citizens, and senior citizens besides other categories are allowed to pay the fee at the PSKs.

Payment can also be made online in the  website –  http://www.passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/welcomeLink through credit or debit cards or net banking of the State Bank of India. Applicants can also generate challans and remit the fee in SBI branches. In such cases, applicants based on the evidence of payment receipt can take the appointments by SBI through online system.

The system will provide the earliest accessible appointment to the applicant, as soon as the payment is made. Applicants can also visit the website mentioned above or can dial the national passport call centre number, 1800 258 1800 for more details.
