Jayalalithaa announces CCTV cameras for police stations and patrol vehicles

Chennai, Apr 25 (TruthDive): With an intention to keep the Chennai police more attentive and cautious in their duty, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has announced to install 2,700 CCTV cameras in police stations across the city soon.

Making the announcement in the assembly, J Jayalalithaa said that all the 135 police stations in the city will be installed with 20 CCTV cameras in order to keep a close watch on crowded areas to put an end to criminal activities.

In addition to this, Jayalalithaa also announced to install mobile CCTV cameras in 200 patrol vehicles at a cost of Rs. 2 crore, so that senior police officers can easily watch and control incidents like protests which  take place in the city and can also examine the problems faced by the public during protests by various groups in the city.

Police will be provided with 135 narrow wheel based vehicles for patrolling in thickly populated areas like T.Nagar , Pulianthope, T.Nagar and Mylapore at a cost of Rs. 9.5 crore.

“It is very easy to go through the lane in such vehicles,” said a senior police officer. 1000 two wheelers at a cost of Rs.4.50 crore and 25 jeeps at a cost of Rs.1.25 crore will also be given to Tamil Nadu Police for effective patrolling.

The Tamil Nadu government has also assured 100 breathalysers for the Chennai traffic police. Intending road safety in an effective manner, the government of Tamil Nadu has planned for more such equipment at a cost of Rs. 50 lakh.  When compared to 2012, out of 19,436 cases filed against drunken driving 9,858 cases have been registered this year, said officials.

For creating awareness among public on crime, the AIADMK government will  be providing vehicles fitted with  audio-visual equipment in order to create an awareness among public on crime prevention and observance of traffic rules at a cost of Rs. 1.80 crore.

Jayalalithaa also said that the state will have five new Fire and Rescue Service station in the city.
