Sting operation records 32 cops taking bribe for illegal constructions in Mumbai

Mumbai, Apr 11 (TruthDive): In a sting operation conducted by a victim himself, 32 cops from Mumbai were suspended after they were caught in a camera accepting bribe to allow illegal constructions in Mumbai’s Kurla area.

The police personnel, who were bribed range from the rank of police constables to assistant sub-inspectors.They were issued a suspension order after recorded footage showed them accepting bribe from Mohammed Khan, at the Kurla (West) Refugee Camp. All the suspended cops were said to be attached to Nehru Nagar police station.

Mumbai police commissioner issued the suspension order to the cops after state home minister RR Patil ordered the commissioner to take immediate action. It was Mohammed Khan who carried out the sting operation in which the camera footage showed the cops collecting a total of Rs 45,000 over the past ten days from Khan.

Initially, Khan approached the Anti- Corruption Bureau (ACB) to reveal the matter, but it did not pay much heed to the matter and turned away Khan, after which Khan submitted the record to the local Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), who initiated an inquiry.

Khan said that the cops told him that they were sent by their senior officers to collect the money. The spy camera which was fixed ten days ago recorded each and every action of the visiting cops.

Talking to reporters, Khan said that after the cops learnt about the modification work carried out at his friend’s residence they made a frequent visit to his friend’s house after which he planned to fix a spy camera.

Assistant commissioner of police Milind Bhise who was handed over the case, prepared the inquiry report based on which action was taken against the cops, said Deputy Commissioner of police (Zone VI) Lakhmi Gautam.

It is a shame on the police department, said Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh who also added saying that all the apprehended cops were constables and not officers.
