New Delhi, Mar 20(TruthDive): Thwarting a demonstration, while debating the anti-rape bill yesterday, the ruling government has initiated all its members to make their presence in the Upper House while the draft law to punish crimes against women such as rape and other sexual harassments is taken up by the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
However ,Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Rahul remained absent on Tuesday. The Lok Sabha was mainly vacant when the vote took place as several parties admitted their obligation in assuring women more protection.
Making unpleasant comments against women, Sharad Yadav of JD (U) said, “Who amongst us has not followed girls?” Yadav in the seven-hour debate who headed the vote argued saying that criminalizing stalking and voyeurism had an opportunity to file false cases against men.
Prior to the Criminal Law (Amendments) Bill 2013 was brought to the notice of the house, a plan to reduce the age of consent from 18 to 16 was abandoned. Giving its suggestion on the age of consent from 18 to 16, the BJP admitted saying that as the appropriate age for a woman to get married is 18, reducing the age of consent to 16 would no doubt lead to pre-marital sex.
According to the Criminal Laws (Amendment) Bill, set up in wake of the most deadly gang-rape of a 23-year-old paramedical student in a moving bus, death penalty for extreme cases of rape and 20 years in jail for other rape cases are offered. Crime against women such as stalking, voyeurism, acid attack and trafficking of women are liable to be punished under criminal law, but the Lower House voted against life imprisonment for acid attacks.
The JS Verma Commission disapproved recommending death penalty for heinous rapes and sought marital rape to be acknowledged as criminal offence, to which protesters disputed the new proposal claiming it to be a wishy-washy description recommended by a panel of legal experts.
