Mani Ratnam’s Kadal a box office disaster

Chennai, Feb 14 (TruthDive): Mani Ratnam’s Kadal,much-talked about romantic drama, turned out to be a disaster at box office. It appears the magic of Brand Mani Ratnam has not fared well at the box office with Kadal. Ace director Mani Ratnam was back in action after a gap of three years with Kadal.

The distributors who bought the rights of Kadal are said to have run into huge losses, running more than 30%. They feel that only losses falling below 30% can be borne by them. The distributors who have faced huge losses are said to have pressed Mani Ratnam for compensation a few days ago.

It was also said that around fifty members who had acquired the theatrical rights of Kadal had agitated before the office of Madra Talkies, demanding compensation.

One of the distributors of the film had told IANS that they could not manage to recover even 50% of the investment.

It is said that Kadal not facing good reviews from film buffs and critics had already been taken off from many screens.

Earlier, a prèss release by Madras Talkies said that Mani Ratnam had sold the Tamil and dubbed Telugu versions of “Kadal” to Gemini Industries and Imaging Ltd in March 2012 itself on Minimum Guarantee (MG) basis. The release added that Madras Talkies has had no other dealing with anyone else for the distribution of their film nor has been party to any contracts Gemini might have entered into in this regard.

In response to the demands of distributors for compensation of losses, Madras Talkies has said that it does not want to get involved in the issue as the film rights have already been sold to Gemini Industries and Imaging Ltd on MG basis. However, Gemini production house is yet to respond to Madras Talkies’ reaction.

Kadal with its extremely slow-paced story opened to a lukewarm response and out of all Mani Ratnam’s films, Kadal opened to a bad response according to trade analyst Trinath.

Kadal is said to have been a flop in the overseas market too.

  1. Kadal really a great movie. i watched twice..

  2. KADAL is heart touching and an outstanding film, picturised completely in Kadal (OCEAN), High Guts needed to do this movies in lifetime… This is one of my BEST FILM by Mani Ratnam sir….

  3. Raavanan is an awesome film. The story & screenplay!! No one, as in “NO ONE”, can portray something flowing through our veins, like the Raamayana in such a lateral point of view. Not to mention the great artistic filmography.

And Kadal is a great film. The story was written by an artistic novelist, for god’s sake!! You cannot expect a Shankar’s or A.R.Murugadoss’s commercial stunts. It is a film for those who love the art, and who don’t want to be spoon-fed.

And, Kadal is not a disaster. In some areas of Tamil Nadu, the distributors couldn’t fetch returns for them. The collections have very well surpassed the budget in 9days!!
