Chennai, Feb 12 (TruthDive):  Vinodhini, victim of a gruesome acid attack died in a private hospital here in Chennai around 9 am today.

23-year old Vinodhini was a B Tech graduate; she was an IT professional working in Chennai and her father is a watchman at a private school in Karaikal.

On November 14,when Vinodhini was waiting at the bus terminus in Karaikal to return to Chennai, fate played cruel on her when a young man, a concrete-mixing operator with a construction company whose proposal  she had rejected earlier, threw acid on her.

Vinodhini sustained severe injuries to her face, stomach, arms and shoulder.  She was immediately treated at a private hospital in Karaikal and later shifted to JIPMER in Puducherry. She was again referred to Government Kilpauk Hospital in Chennai for further treatment. Doctors in the hospital said she had suffered  40% burn injuries at the time of admission. She had lost vision in both her eyes by then.

Dr Jayaraman, plastic surgeon who attended to her had earlier said that acid attacks and injuries are very rare in Chennai. With her medical bills running high and her family unable to cope up, Vinodhini was moved to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital last month. She was again transferred to a private hospital within two days.

Suresh, 29, the man who threw acid on her  is charged with attempted murder, under Section 307 of the IPC and is in jail.

Earlier, it was reported that Vinodhini very much wanted to survive and that she had expressed her wish to her father to make her live at any cost.

Dr V. Jayaraman, who attended to her till she breathed her last said she had a cardiac arrest. A post-mortem is  expected to be conducted at KMC after which the body will be handed over to the family, said sources.

The central government in a bid to protect women  had recently cleared a new set of laws which provide a minimum of 10 years in prison for those found guilty of acid attacks.
