Bridge under construction collapses in Mumbai, three dead

Mumbai, Feb 7 (TruthDive): In a major mishap in Mumbai, three persons were killed while six others were injured after a portion of an under-construction bridge collapsed near the international airport late on Wednesday.

Police said eight fire tenders and four ambulances were rushed to the spot where rescue operations are underway.  Police also feared several others to be trapped beneath the debris of the thirty-five metre long block of an under-construction bridge that collapsed near the international airport last night in Mumbai.

All the trapped persons were said to be the workers who were working on the site. All the injured have been admitted to the Cooper Hospital and Desai hospital, said the police. Police have filed a complaint against the construction company L&T charging a case of negligence. A case has been filed against the contractor, engineer and the supervisor of the company, said a senior police officer.

This is perhaps the second time in a month that such an incident has occurred in the metropolitan city of Mumbai, said sources. Though rescue operation was going on, the BMC disaster management team and fire officials claimed that the workers who were trapped beneath the debris were rescued.

The incident occurred around 11.25 pm in which two people received serious head injury and were taken to Holy Spirit Hospital in Andheri (East). Some were taken to privately-run Seven Hills Hospital in Andheri (East). Two persons with head injuries were said to be serious and were shifted to the Intensive Care Unit, said the hospital staffs of Holy Spirit.

The bridge which was close to the international airport was expected to be completed by the year-end that leads to the international terminal of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.

Heavy-duty cranes were also deployed at the accident site for rescuing the workers. Shiv Sena Mayor Sunil Prabhu visited the spot around midnight shortly after the accident took place. Rescue workers claimed that it would take some time to clear the rubble.
