Jayalalithaa launches multi-speciality hospital in new Secretariat complex

Chennai, Feb 1 (TruthDive): Jayalalithaa on Wednesday launched the multi-speciality hospital at Omandurar Estate, after the Madras  HC came in support of the state government’s decision to convert the previous DMK Chief Minister’s dream project of Rs 550-crore new assembly cum-secretariat complex into a multi-speciality referral hospital and medical college.

In addition to two consultation rooms – neurology and cardiology, a pharmacy has also been opened to provide patients with free medicines, said director of medical education Dr C Vamasadhara. Specialist doctors will visit the patients from 10 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 5 pm in the multi-speciality hospital.

Essential equipment such as blood pressure monitors and a bed to examine the out-patients have also been provided in the consultation room. A woman from Chepauk who was the first patient to be examined said that she had an injury in her shoulder and has been suffering from severe headache.

Clearing the route for the state government, the Madras High Court on January 24 passed the order to go ahead with the opening of the hospital.

The complex which was constructed by the previous DMK government shifted the Assembly and Secretariat from Fort St George to the new building, during its rule. Within a short period the AIADMK government which came to power in 2011, reversed the DMK decision and also kept the building unused.

Challenging the  Jayalalithaa  government’s decision, the DMK leaders even filed a petition in the court, but finally the verdict went in favour of the state government  after the high court approved the  AIADMK’s decision  which said it was  ”neither a waste nor a decision in haste.”

A medical college building is also likely to come within the campus. A senior health official said that as out-patient unit has been inaugurated, in-patient wards and theatres will also be launched soon.
