Chennai, Jan 18 (TruthDive): In an attempt to organize ‘Thamizhar Thiruvizha’, Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi launched a two-day mini Chennai Sangamam in Chennai on January 17 and 18 that was held earlier on the day of Thai Pongal during the DMK regime.
Folk dances will be performed in five places in which two hundred folk artists have been booked for the event, said Kanimozhi, who also released a collection of poetry ‘Nooru Pookal Malaratuum,’ written in the two previous editions of Chennai Sangamam.
The two-day folk art and cultural show will be a smaller version of Chennai Sangamam, which was inaugurated by DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Thursday evening at Mylapore.
Thamizhar Thiruvizha events are scheduled to take place at Kotturpuram, Mylapore, Saligramam and Thousand Lights, initiated by Kanimozhi in order to encourage folk art and artists. Kanimozhi also requested the people of Tamil Nadu to come forward and make the event successful.
Top exponents of folk arts and dances like Thenmozhi Rajendran, Chinnaponnu Kumar and Kanyakumari Muthuperumal will perform in the two-day cultural show.
Touted to be the biggest open festival in India, the concept of Chennai Sangamam was initiated by Kanimozhi and Tamil Mayyam founder Fr. Jegath Gaspar Raj in 2007 with support from Tamil Nadu government with an intention to revive the age-old village festivals and showcase Tamil culture and tradition. The 7-day grand cultural extravaganza was held on beaches, parks and college / school grounds.
The event led by the DMK MP Kanimozhi is based on literature and art, epic and village dramas, said Kanimozhi daughter of DMK chief M Karunanidhi.
The idea to mark the event in open grounds was an inspiration from the Bangaluru Habba celebrations which include traditional and folk music shows, martial arts, folk dances, classical music in addition to dance performances, street plays, drama / theatre according to Wikipedia.
