Tablet market expected to double in India in 2013

New Delhi, Jan 5 (TruthDive): Research firm CyberMedia has forecast on Friday that the tablet computer sales in India is expected to at least double this year to 6 million as new devices at low-cost attract consumers and business users.

In the third quarter of 2012, the overall tablet market in India posted sales of 1.1 million units, up from 98,135 tablets sold in the same quarter of 2011.

With the launch of low-cost devices running on Google Inc’s Android platform by local firms, sales of tablets and smartphones have grown rapidly in the last two years. There are a plenty of new Indian companies who have entered into the tablet market such as Micromax, Karbonn and Lava.

CyberMedia research has also delivered the ranking of the sales of the tablets. The list says in terms of sales during 3Q 2012, Samsung is currently the leader in the tablet sales market with a market share of 23.9 percent, next comes Micromax with 15.3 percent share and Datawind (manufacturer of the controversial Akash tablet) occupies the third slot with a 12.3 percent share.

Faisal Kawoosa, lead analyst at CyberMedia’s telecoms practice, said in a statement that in 2013, new tablets that work on Microsoft Corp’s Windows 8 platform and the companies’ modification of tablets for business applications will surely bring about a great change in the market again.

With more youngsters and growing middle class people using the tablets, the market is finding room to increase even further. As it is, doubling the tablet market in India means sales of just six million units.

CyberMedia commenting on the 2013’s trend, said 2013 will see markets form around three price points, which include Rs. 5,000-10,000; Rs. 15,000-20,000 and over Rs. 35,000. Another interesting facet in the research highlighted that the Average Sales Value of tablets in India during 3Q 2012 was approximately Rs. 13,200, while 63.5 percent of all tablets sold were below the Rs. 10,000-mark.
