Shanghai, Oct 15 (TruthDive): Leander Paes -Radek Stepanek have won men’s doubles in the Shanghai Masters, after beating Mahesh Bhupathi – Rohan Bopanna pair for 6-7(7) 6—3 10—5, in Shanghai yesterday. After losing the first set for 6-7, Paes-Stepanek pair came back well enough to win the next two sets.
The fourth seeds, Indo—Czech pair broke their opposite players twice to win the match and took over the trophy in about 1 hour 36 minutes. Indian veteran player Leander Paes, 39, said that he was exactly at the career stage when he was “playing for history and playing for milestones.”
It was more like a grudge game for Leander Paes as both Bopanna and Bhupathi had denied pairing with him at London Olympics.
Paes said that this match was more like a personal match for all the three Indian players. Radek Stepanek joined with Leander Paes and has made the match a great fun for him. Now, he is relaxed, joked and laughed. He said that he stayed relaxed.
Paes and Stepanek joined together at the beginning of the season and have won the Australian Open and Miami Masters. They were the finalists at the last month’s US Open and have come to Shanghai after finishing as runners-up at Japan Open in Tokyo.
Leander Paes said that they had a great year, as it started with a big bang. Doing well in the early partnership is usually what happens. But, continuing to play well all through the whole year indicates the quality of the game that they play, he said.
The winning player Paes said that for him personally what he really likes playing with his partner Radek is that they are looking to develop all time. Paes and Stepanek pair is already qualified for the season-ending World Tour Finals in London and they have shared a USD 207,320 amount.
