New York, Sep 25 (): Aishwarya Rai, Miss World winner in 1994 and renowned Bollywood actress has been selected by United Nations as its new International Goodwill Ambassador for the UN joint programme for HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS). She will promote global awareness to the world on protecting the children from the deadly HIV infection and increased access to the anti-retroviral treatment.
The excited actress said that she feels honoured to accept this new appointment. Promoting awareness on the health issues to the world especially related to children and women has been of prior importance for her always and now as she is a new mother she could personally relate the concerns and joys of mothers and hopes that we have for our children.
For many years, Aishwarya Rai has been involved in the humanitarian issues and now she will focus on HIV. She said she strongly believed that each and every new-born baby should be free from HIV. She wished that all women with HIV to stay in good health and get the right kind of treatment. The actress promised that with her recognition as UNAIDS goodwill ambassador, she would do her utmost to make things happen.
At the press conference, Aishwarya in a stunning chic black outfit said that she would initially be just like a fresh student, holding the organisation’s hand which would lead her to the real picture on the ground.
Aishwarya had been called to become a part of UN programmes several years ago but as she had her tight packed movie schedules, she could not spare her time for such initiatives.
Now, after blessed with a wonderful daughter, she is planning her time forward. She finds it a pleasure to take her time off from film industry and take care of her daughter.
She said that she is at a “good” point in her life where she is planning her career ahead, while also giving personal time to her family and daughter.
