Anti-nuclear protest at Kudankulam takes an ugly violent turn with State Police on a rampage

Chennai/Kudankulam, Sep 11 (TruthDive): Protest against the Kudankulam nuclear power plant enters third day today. Kudankulam is tense with the site thronged by thousands of anti-nuclear protesters. People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) activists which includes women and children are on a 2-day hunger strike, which they continued through the night, out in the open.

Tamil Nadu police are arresting people in the name of house-to-house checks, reports say.

In a strong protest against the atrocities unleashed by State Police on the anti-nuclear protesters at Idinthakarai and in support  of the demands of people of Kudankulam, Tamil activists and political parties went  on  a huge rally at Anna Salai, Chennai  today which resulted in traffic blockade for over an hour. 150 people are said to be arrested.

A baby is said to have been died in the violent stampede caused by the Tamil Nadu Police.

Policemen have fired teargas shells on public, including women and children.

When the Kudankulam site was taken siege by the people, Police charged into Idinthakarai, where they went on a rampage. They got into a church, vandalized the statue of Mary, tore down the banner of anti-nuclear protest and have gone to the extreme extent of urinating in the holy place of worship.

Media and press people have been attacked. Children are left scared and are deprived of basic essentials like water and milk, news reports say. Policemen can again get into Idinthakarai anytime, people fear.

Amidst this chaos and tense moments, S P Udayakumar, convener of PMANE has stated that he would surrender and court arrest late evening today at the Kudankulam Police Station so as not to blow up the issue to manifold proportions. However, the people of Kudankulam will take a decision regarding this, sources say.

Meantime, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa maintains her stand that the nuclear plant is safe and has appealed to people to maintain calm.
