Madurai, Aug 10 (): In a first such crackdown by the district administration,one of the granite companies accused of illegal granite quarrying in Madurai, sealed the premises of PRP Exports on Thursday, a major granite quarrying and exporting firm at Melur.
In the early morning raid that was conducted in the office of the PRP Exports, by the district administration led by Collector Anshul Mishra and Superintendent of Police V Balakrishnan, executed the well-coordinated operation to seal the 400 acre PRP Exports factory premises with round the clock accuracy right from 6.30 am.
“The premises were sealed in order to prevent tampering with records and destroying of evidences,” said the Collector.
The officials kept the raid plan secret until they left for the spot to prevent information from leaking. A team of police in large numbers reached the spot as they set off for the raid in Melur to tackle any opposition from quarry workers, said the officials.
The Collector and SP accompanying some senior officials entered the extensive building of the PRP building which houses office and workshop together, in the early hours of Thursday morning at 6:30 am and carried out the raid for more than three hours. The officials were divided to form separate teams to carry out the inspection of the entire building that was spread over several acres. At the time of the raid, the Collector sealed two blocks as the police prevented anyone from entering or leaving the premises.
In response to the raid, Mishra claimed that the inspection so far has revealed illegal quarrying in at least 45 of the 175 quarries in the district and said that personnel from various government departments have been deployed to find the misdeeds. The Collector stated that the report regarding the inspection will be sent to the state government once it gets over.
