Rajesh Khanna laid to rest: grandson Aarav lights pyre

Mumbai, July 19 (): Thousands crowded beside the streets of Mumbai to bid a tearful adieu to India’s first superstar Rajesh Khanna, who made his last journey from his memorable home ‘Aashirwad’ in Carter Road in Mumbai towards Paramhans crematorium in Vile Parle.

Rajesh Khanna, nine-year-old grandson Aarav performed last rites to him at the Vile Parle crematorium on Thursday. Akshay Kumar, Aarav’s father helped to thrust a torch into the pyre, which engulfed the legendary actor who was attracted by millions since attaining stardom in 1969 in flames.

Aarav is the son of Rajesh Khanna’s elder daughter Twinkle married to Akshay kumar.

The actor, who was fondly called Kaka by his friends and family, passed away Wednesday morning following a liver infection. He was 69. The final journey of the legend began around 10 a.m. His body was kept in a transparent chest and was placed on a mini-truck adorned with white flowers.

Rajesh Khanna was accompanied by his separated wife Dimple Kapadia by son-in-law and actor Akshay Kumar, his younger daughter Rinkie Khanna and her husband Sameer Saran by his side on the top of the vehicle, edged by on both the sides by the actor’s huge black and white photographs. Twinkle was however missing from the procession as she is in the family way.

The funeral procession began from ‘Aashirwad’, his Bandra residence around 10 AM and went through Carter Road, Turner Road and S.V. Road before reaching the crematorium. The procession was originally planned to be long, but it was kept short due to rain.

Bearing the rain, his gathered in crowds to pay homage to Bollywood`s first superstar Rajesh Khanna. It was a farewell that the superstar deserved.

Bollywood celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Karan Johar, Kareena Kapoor, Rani Mukerji, Karisma Kapoor, Sudhir Mishra, Sajid Khan and Abhishek Bachchan were present at the crematorium.
