Bathinda, Nov 1 (TruthDive): In Punjab, the opening ceremony of the 2nd World Cup Kabaddi has set the stage for 20-day long sports extravaganza. Teams from 14 countries are participating. They would vie for the title as well as the total prize money of 4.11 crore rupees.
Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan scheduled to perform during the inauguration ceremony. In the closing ceremony of the tournament may witness performance of either Karishma Kapoor or Katrina Kaif.
This is the second Kabaddi World Cup started in Punjab town Bathinda on Tuesday. Fourteen countries including Argentina, Pakistan, USA, Canada, UK, Italy, Norway, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Australia, Germany, Spain and hosts India will take part men’s category.
The first edition of the World Cup last year was won by India.
The World Cup Kabaddi tournament will take place from November 1 to 20 in the Indian Punjab. Geo Super telecasted the ceremony live at 4.30 pm today. The final match and closing ceremony would be organized at Ludhiana.
According to Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab and tournament’s chairman Sukhbir Singh Badal the prize money of this edition of the event had been doubled to Rs two crore for the winning team. India had won the first edition of the tournament last year. The runners-up will pocket Rs one crore, while the team finishing at the third spot will be richer by Rs 51 lakhs. Apart from these, Badal said each participating team would get Rs 10 lakh.
Besides, four nations will also vie for Rs 25 lakh prize money in the women’s section, he added. Badal said that the traditional game of kabaddi had gained immense popularity in the last one year. “Around 17 to 18 countries approached us to participate in this tournament,” he said.
Pakistan outclassed traditional rivals India 42-33 to clinch the Kabaddi gold of the South Asian Beach Games at Hambantota, Sri Lanka, in the beginning of the on-going month.
