Brisk polling in Puducherry bye-polls

Puducherry, Oct 13 (): By noon, 41% polling was recorded in the bye-polls to the Indira Nagar Assembly constituency here that has 29,005 voters.

The bye-poll was called for after the Territorial Chief Minister and founder of the All-India N R Congress (AINRC), N Rangasamy quit the seat on 25th June. Rangasamy, who won from both Indira Nagar and Kadirkamam, in the 13 April Assembly polls, had retained the latter.

The ruling AINRC this time, is pitted against its former ally AIADMK and Congress. CPI and PMK have pledged support to AINRC. The ruling AINRC nominee, A Tamilselvan is the Chief Minister’s nephew and a fresh face in the poll battle.  The opposition Congress had fielded V Aroumougame who was defeated by Rangasamy in the April Assembly polls at Indira Nagar. The AIADMK nominee is A Venkateswaran while the other party contestants are K Vaithianathan (BSP) and R Shanmugham (Indhiya Jananayaka Katchi). Independents are also facing the poll battle.

The ruling AINRC is facing its first electoral test after dislodging Congress in the April 13 elections.
