Real reason for DMK Congress colossal defeat in TN – An open letter

An open letter to NDTV, CNNIBN, Times Now and Headlines Today.

Dear All,

First of all I would like to congratulate all of you for having given an extensive coverage of Tamil Nadu elections. Your minute by minute news and analysis were beyond comparison. As a common man of Tamil Nadu, I would like to pin point two important issues which none of your media took attention of. So it is my duty to bring those issues to your notice.

You interviewed many eminent political analysts to know why there was a tide against the ruling DMK and Congress party in Tamil Nadu. Invariably the answers from them were corruption, price rise,  2G scam, family rule etc. Unfortunately none gave you the real reason behind this election debacle; rather the North Indian media failed to understand the ground situation.

I have been watching the happenings in Tami Nadu for the past 20 years. People of Tamil Nadu always have the habit of tolerating corruption as it is nothing new to them. But the foremost issue which went against the DMK and Congress was nothing but Tamil Genocide in Srilanka.

As it was the mistake of the Congress government and the DMK which failed to stop the genocidal war in 2009, Tamils in the island lost 70,000 lives at the hands of butchering Srilankan army. United Nations panel report also confirms this mass killing which amounts to genocide. The news and images of this Tamil genocide were carried forward to each and every doorstep of the people of Tamil Nadu by the Tamil activists. That moved our people’s mind and heart to vote against Congress and DMK. Had the DMK supported the Tamil cause, by now DMK would have been re-elected. This was the actual and real cause behind this spectacular and unprecedented election in Tamil Nadu.

Second issue is the people whom you are interviewing in your media. All North Indian media invariably tend to interview only a few selected intellectuals like Cho Ramaswamy and Subramaniyan Swamy. This is absolutely a wrong action from your side to know the sentiments of Tamil Nadu people. Very simple reason is that they do not represent the real Tamils rather they represent a small group of elites. They project their own views as if they project the real views of the Tamils.

We invite you to Tamil Nadu and interview a common man who will confirm that these people are nothing but a bunch of jokers. If you continue asking opinions from these jokers as you were doing it for the past 20 years, actually you are doing injustice to the people of Tamil Nadu. Their opinions will not reflect the real opinion of the Tamils. Please do not continue to do the same mistake again. If you do not know whom to interview inside Tamil Nadu, I will be happy to show the intellectual Tamils who will certainly entertain you with excellent news and analysis.

Therefore, I request you from my heart to consider these two issues seriously and do some little help to our Tamil community henceforth. That is the only way by which the justice can be restored and oppressed can be relieved. I fervently hope that you have indeed understood the core of the problem underpinning the misery of the Tamils.

Thanking you,

Yours Truly

Rajkumar Palaniswamy

  1. Dear Rajkumar Palaniswamy,

You are really great as per the TN election analysis. All of those who says the DMK lost because of corruption should find an answer to the following questions.

    1. Now a days Karunanidhi speaks more about EELAM and forms TESO organisation for what reason?

    2. If TN election is a message about corruption, why do Ramadoss and Tirumavalavan lost the election without even a single seat.

Please try to learn the tamil history, at least of past 40 years politics :
-Congress won because of kamaraj and his known political life.
-DMK groom as a big power only after the so called “mozhi por” against Hindi by C.N.Annadurai.
-ADMK groom as a big opposition power because of MGR (The person who won the hearts of the poors)

Now no Kamarajar, Anna or MGR, so TN peoples are in search of another who could help them. So people tries to find a change either of DMK or ADMK (Example is consecutive power shifts from DMK to ADMK since 1991).

I Strongly believe Seeman could join the list soon by 2016. He is the alternate for DMK and ADMK…

  3. Mr Palaniswami is right on both points he has made. In India there is no way to read the pulse of the people as scientific opinion polling is yet to take roots. Moreover, the real opinions and motivations of people are lost in huge distractions like Endhiran for example. The genocide in Sri Lanka was largely ignored by the Congress and DMK for their own selfish reasons. People like Swamy and Cho are indeed elitists who will never identify with any real Tamil cause. Who says Karunanidhi does not speak up for Tamils; his sons, wives, nephews and other close family are all Tamils and those are the only Tamils that matter to him. JJ is no angel either, but she is atleast talking about it. It is not too late for MK to address some of the inhuman and grievous mistakes that India is responsible for in the unfortunate plight of the Lankan Tamils. He can start with the status of the Srilankan Tamil refugees in India, especially a plan to rehabilitate the teenage children of these refugees who are suffering without any possibilities for education or employment. These people who have been living in India as refugees for over two decades seem to be a forgotten entity with no rights, privileges or means for livelihood in either India or Srilanka. I would like see a plan from Swamy, Cho or Jaya that conforms to human rights principles.

  4. Mr Palaniswamy

Srilankan genocide definitely happened. Everyones’ sentiments are with them and we can maximum pray for the safety. But the logic that some party will give audio supporting tamil’s cause actually attracts the voters is completely illogical. The tamil nadu parties have for long been giving talks and audio with some video about sentimental topics such as periyar’s caste theory, srilankan tamils etc and have been fooling the people for long.

Please think about how much the government is looting the people and everyone is paying more and more tax. Seems like you do not even address it. Probably you are not in india (or Tamil nadu) paying tax.

Start showcasing corruption also as the main agenda.

    Yours truly..

  5. If Jayalalithaa decides to align with Congress Party in the coming parliament elections there will be recalculations and reassessment. If such an alignment wins the elections what will be the inference?

  6. Dear Rajkumar Palaniswamy,

Thank you very much for a very good article/open letter. As an Eelam Tamil, on this day (May 18), where many many Tamils were killed brutally by the Sri Lankan forces in 2009, we remember the days where Mr. Karunanidhi didn’t do ANYTHING to save Eelam Tamils…

We was fasting and sending letters… A big drama!! Eelam Tamils really hoped that he would help us! We were very happy, when he wrote a poem to Mr. S.P. Thamilselvan, who was killed by Sri Lankan Air Force… But then Mr. Karunanidhi totally betrayed Eelam Tamils and our freedom struggle for Tamil Eelam!

In Tamil Nadu we had this great young man, who set fire to himself… Like a Tamil young man in Swiss… Thousands of Tamils in France, UK, Germany, Swiss, Denmark, Norway, Canada, USA, Holland, Belgium etc. demonstrated in many days to stop the genocide in Sri Lanka!
Many young Tamils were fasting to get the attention from Western medias and politicians in many days!!!

As a very powerfull man like Mr. Karunanidhi… what did he do to save Eelam Tamils??? I’m very disappointed about him, and I’m very very happy that Tamil brothers and sisters in Tamil Nadu have voted for Mrs. Jayalalitha… I hope she will do more for Eelam Tamils – like our MGR…

Once again, thank you very much for article Sir.

    Kindly regards

  7. Hi Gopinath ,
Must say your logic is very valid and I completely agree wiith you . No wonder Mr.Palanisamy has not answered you directly . Probably you will never get a direct answer

  8. Mr.Palanisamy ,
You never answer any of the quetsions directly isnt it . I did not say i dint care abt srilankan tamils , you said it .Look nobody denies the fact that in SL tamils has been killed . A genocide happened and it is disastrous. However tamil nadu elections have always been to the domestic issues . If you are going to deny every voice that say eelam issue amy be one of the issue but certainly not “the issue” then probbably you have deny a huge majority .As a voter i thought which choice is best for me and what would affect my life. My sympathy is with sri lankan tamils but I wvoted against DMK for the iissue of corruption
BTW I am against genocide and certainly do not support LTTE . For me LTTE is no saint they always remains a terror group . If you take up the path of violence it will come back and haunt you .

  9. Most analysts agree that the Sri Lankan Tamil massacre played a contributing factor in DMK/Congress’s bad performance in this election. Cho Ramaswamy is a quick witted person, but Sri Lanka is his waterloo I guess – he has been making a mockery of himself by trusting and supporting Sinhalese hardliners such as Rajapakse. For quite a few so called elites of Tamil Nadu – the Sri Lankan chapter has turned into a slippery slope, especially after the entry of Rajapakse.

  10. A detailed comment from our friend Mr. Pragatheeshwar Thirunavukarasu

The crux of this election is NOT the 2G scam, is NOT corruption, is NOT inflation, is NOT anti-incumbency, is NOT caste, is NOT freebies…. The center-piece factor deciding the fate of this election is the SRILANKAN TAMIL ISSUE….. Why does one say that? –

    (1) People came out in record numbers to vote. The voting percentages were as high as 90%, which is the highest recorded in history in several democratic countries. This means its an ‘uprising’, a huge wave across all sections of the people…. Such huge waves don’t rise because of corruption or inflation. It often occurs as a response to oppression. The last time such huge voting waves happened was in the anti-hindi agitation period to overthrow the Congress… Corruption, inflation are all forgivable mistakes…. Oppression is not a forgivable offense.

    (2) Most surveys and exit polls recorded that TN voters were reluctant and hesitant to reveal their voting preferences and the key issues they voted on… In the very few polls which did record the reasons, the Srilankan tamil issue was said to have been the most important issue, which reflects why people have been reluctant to speak out in other surveys, because people were afraid to speak of the Tamil issue as it is sensitive and is felt to be restricted.

    (3) Several ministers and key politicians, i.e. the so-called party “heavyweights” have been overthrown in the DMK and Congress. When voters don’t like the administration, they will vote a party out of power, but the key politicians will manage to win seats. It is only when they DONT LIKE THE POLICY itself, that people root out the key politicians. All key DMK ministers have lost. Even Karunanithi and Stalin were trailing in their constituencies – which was a very scary and tense moment. Finally somehow at the last minute they ended up leading again. The same was true for the Congress key politicians – Thangabalu lost!

    (4) Caste parties were decimated! Especially the biggest caste factor in TN – Dr. Ramadoss’s Pattali Makkal Katchi won a meagre 3 seats… And Thirumavalavan’s Viduthalai Chiruthaigal lost all seats!… These were parties that were seen as compromising on the Tamil issue, for their own castes… People have shown that their castes are more important that their Tamil identity.

    (5) The pattern of results closely correlates with what the Tamil activists wanted to see. Looks like Seeman’s dream might have come true!

    (6) Most important observation – An ally of the winning party (ie. DMDK) has scored more seats that the major losing party (DMK) !!!!!!!! Since, ADMK is going to set up the government independently,Vijayakanth’s DMDK will be the leader of the opposition! DMK is not even the opposition party now!….. People have shown that if a party stands for oppression of Tamils, it cannot even be the opposition party in TN!

This is a strong, resounding message sent by people of TN to politicians – Don’t fool around with the Tamil identity. It has been more important to the Tamil people than caste, religion, free perks, etc…. Give us liberty, we will get our education, health care, economy, trade, etc…. Your job is only to protect us, fight oppression and preserve our identity and culture… That is the integral part of both state and national politics…

  11. Hi author,
your article lacks basic understanding of electorate of Tamilnadu. I have a simple question..whats was the situation in Lanka different from 2009 to 2011.
In 2009, Srilanka crisis was its worst. According to ur logic created by you, AIADMK Shoud have won atleast 20 seats. Also Vaiko was there with ADMK. DMK swept the polls.
Then if Seeman could have contested, then according to u, he would have swept the polls..Tamilnadu(atleast 70%) people never voted or will vote based on lankan issue.

Lankan Issue was there in 2011, but 7 cr people are not well versed in that matter. If u could have told fisherman issue yes i agree.

Its clearly DMK nonsense family rule, domination in all business and loot in 2G scam led to debacle of DMK. Hope now DMK will stick with Stalin and throw out Alagiri/Vadivel out of party to save something for 2016.
Very very poor assessment of TN elections by you.

  12. Mr. Rajiv,
I think you are one among the deaf men of Tamil Nadu , who thinks nothing has happened in Tamil Eelam and nobody was dead. A genocide has taken place and you are simply hiding a pumpkin in a rice bowl just like the DMK & Co. We asked even a man residing on a pavement who is worried about the brethren who were killed in Tamil Eelam. You speak as if nothing has happened. Tamil people always have the habit of electing the best among the worst for the past 20 years. This time DMK was the worst mainly because of their indifferent attitude towards Tamil genocide.

  13. Dear Mr.Palanisamy ,
First of all, I am a tamil for more than 20 yrs and I can say I am more tamilian than you .Must say I have never read such a peice of crap in my entire life . You speak about eelam so much and say tamilians has a habit of tolerating corruption . . Now going back to history, tamils never accepted corruption , do you need prove well let me point out
DMK govt got thrown out becasue of corruption and it is even pointed out in sarkaria commission .
1996 Jaya’s govt got thrown out because of corruption. 2006 there was no corruption in TN so Jaya got 61 seat . The real reason for Jaya’s defeat in that election was the Vijaykanth factor and improper choice of alliance . 2011 DMK got ousted because of corruption
You please learn history before appealing to all national media .FYI in 1996 there was no eelam problem .
I would urge you not to picture in web like tamils tolerate corruption .First you work for the tamilnadu pride and later can go to eelam pride.

  14. Dear Cool Indian,
As your name suggests , you will not be able to understand either the context or the importance of this letter. This letter has already been acknowledged by thousands of Tamil people across the world and people have personally thanked me for writing this letter. Probably you belong to one such media group which hides the real facts. DMK is now regretting for its mistake of not supporting Eelam cause. However it does not dare to tell the real reason to public. That is the reason, it simply says 2G is the main cause for the debacle. Better you befriend a Tamil to know the sentiments of the larger Tamil community.

  15. Mr. Rajkumar,

Your letter is logically very weak. It seems that you are targetting two people who have credibility and years of reporting. Also it seems that you are fanatic and brainwashed based on this statement “Very simple reason is that they do not represent the real Tamils rather they represent a small group of elites. “.

Become non judgemental and give a clear insight to whatever you are suggesting.

Related to the debacle of DMK, they themselves have admitted that 2G is the reason and not the srilankan tamil issue. Hope you get your facts right the next time you put the next letter!

    Yours truly,
    True Indian!
