Chennai, Nov 2(): The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) started its operation on special buses for school students for comfortable commutation at selected routes from Monday afternoon.
The following 12 routes – 23C, 29A, 11G, 12B, 21L, 27D, 29C, 47, 5B, 6D, 37B and 38C have been made vailable as special services.
Two special services had been operated on the routes in morning and evening. Only the pass holders will be able to use these services. There are also 200 Ladies Special services run by the corporation.
The special services for students are provided in discussion with the traffic police and the School Education Department in analyzing the routes that pass through cluster of schools. A survey conducted on this, reveals that there are more then 400 schools and colleges along the route of 23C and 29A.
K N Nehru – Transport Minister mentioned that overcrowding on certain areas of the city had resulted in school students traveling on footboard of the buses. He also added that these special services are aimed improving the safety while traveling and if this 12 routes prove successful then the service will be provided to other routes also.
V.Babu, MTC Managing Director said that, it is a great challenge to cater to the needs to all the students within thirty minute timing and indicated that staggering school timing could be a viable solution.
