Defiance – Beginning of freedom (English Movie)

A powerful, gripping adventure that showcases the extra-ordinary true story of Bielski brothers. The three brothers were simple farmers, who narrowly escaped the Nazis, and turned into revolutionaries and fought for the freedom of their people.

Daniel Craig (James Bond: The Quantum Solace) stars as Tuvia Bielski, an ordinary citizen who turns to become a revolutionary hero, saving and leading his people in the Belarusian forests, during World War II. Tuvia and his brother Zus (Liev Schreiber, X-Men Origins: Wolverine)  have difference of opinion in the course of action to be taken. While Tuvia, helps the Nazi camp inmates and help them live free in the forest, providing food and security, Zus prefers a more active role, and joins the Soviet Army in fighting the Nazis.

Their younger brother is torn between the two brothers, but sticks with Tuvia in the forest. The movie shows the tough choices Tuvia has to make as a leader of the group, though some circulate rumours of him being power hungry. Tuvia enforces strict discipline in his forest camp and insists that every one should work in the camp.

Zus joins the Soviet army and helps them in many successful attacks against the Nazi regime, but in the final moments, when the Nazis have surrounded the forest and decide to slaughter all men, women and children, the Soviets decide to retreat, leaving Zus frustrated. Yet, Zus and his group of men go back to the forest and help his brother save the people from the Nazi army.

The brothers were believed to have lived with the people in the forest for almost 2 years. The above was my review of the film, which reminded me of the final battle in the forest of Vanni in Srilanka, but Mr. Raa’Picha does not agree with me and is sharing his review as shown below.

Raa’Picha:

The above review is inaccurate and full of errors. The Movie is about a group of Jew terrorists who used poor Jews as human shields in the Belarusian forest. Nazis under the command of the most honourable Fuhrer, Hitler tried very hard to rescue the poor Jews and put them in Concentration .. er .. Welfare Camps. The Nazi soldiers tried every possible way to find the Jews and put them in a safe Concentr..er.. Welfare camps, so that they will not be troubled by those mindless Jew terrorists.

The movie also shows how the Jew terrorists mercilessly killed the kind and benevolent Nazi soldiers, in the name of protecting the Jews. There are scenes in the movie which looks like that Nazi soldiers are shooting at innocent people, but a closer and sharper look shows that it is not the Nazis, but the Jew terrorists that are shooting at their own people, who are trying to flee from the terrorists to reach for the safety of the Concentration ..er.. Welfare camps.

Ok. That was Mr. Raa’Picha’s review. I hope you find the two reviews helpful enough to prompt you to watch this movie. This is a must watch moview for all “Freedom Lovers” as the movie demonstrates the human spirit for freedom and dignity. PS: If you are reading this, remember, YOU are the RESISTANCE.

  1. Resistance and Defiance are often words that have been words used in conjunction with forces that oppose movement or change and have a psychological leaning towards failure..

I think instead we need to associate ourselves with sustainable change or success, icons like Obama or Martin Luther King or Ambedkar etc who were lot more successful in fighting for freedom than the Israelis(I think they are very weak and precarious position in history as they stand now)..

I call for a rethink in the way we approach freedom..with optimism rather than resistance

  2. Ronin,

Agree with you on the point to approach freedom with optimism.. I have been in and out of this thinking that we should be focusing on having the winner’s attitude, but recently a few thoughts popped in my mind regarding what is the winners attitude.

For e.g., The Cross was considered a dark, negative symbol as it was used to crucify criminals, until Jesus dies on the cross. The same Cross has become a revered symbol now.
Take the case of Swastik. It was and is still considered a sacred symbol by some section of the hindus, but it has become a negative representation because of its use by Hitler.

I do agree that words have power and our association with them should be handled with care. But, then again if you look at 19th century, the words resistance, revolution etc were associated with victories and new beginnings. There was an established order of kings, rulers and bureaucrats, and resistance was associated with lowly peasants, until it became successful in France, Russia, China, Cuba and became a word of Vogue all over the world.
The American allied forces were called the resistance during world war II.

Now again, there is a world order set just like the pre-revolution times. So, there is a snare attitude against words like Resistance, Defiance. This is mainly because the oppressing class are so well entrenched in their comfort zone, indulging themselves in all kinds of excesses, that they don’t want to be disturbed by anyone even if they are dying.

Obama is exactly following the steps for success. He associates himself with words like HOPE, CHANGE etc. But my humble opinion is this. How has the common man who believed in him, benefited?

I clearly remember that Obama mentioned in an interview, that the problem in Srilanka is the problem of the other. He said this during his election rally, but did not talk about it after winning the presidential election. So, what is his answer to all those people who supported him, worked for him, believed in him.

To me, he looks like a HOPE salesman, who sold his goods, but did not bother to deliver the goods. He is doing the same lip service in his messages to Iran, North Korea, Myanmar etc. If he is merely giving his opinion on world matters, i don’t find any difference between him and any Tom Dick and Harrry discussing international politics in the road-side coffee shop.

So, I believe the major question is, What is our direction? To grow up mimicking the selfish, so called successful people who populate this earth (or) grow beyond mere labels, tags and bring real change (not the one Mr.Obama is saying) to the world.

    regards
    Arun

  3. The key thing Obama has offered is he has made an unalterable change in the mindset of Americans in terms of Race and even other countries..The change are remarkable and will be seen for at least a century..For ex, my close American friend who has had bad experience with African Americans and sees them in poor light has been forced to look at them differently. and so are his descendants.

In terms of Sri Lanka, Israel and all issues in the world, we cant expect more from him than a american politician..Those are not his agenda..and we cant expect the same from him what he does for Health care in US or Guantanamo, in Sri lanka and other countries..they are not his duties..and also He is a politician..very similar to salesman..He cares first for his customers

We need local Obamas rather than ask him to be our messiah! Like you said the words resistance, revolution were considered highly in 20th century..I think they are not popular or signify good change anymore.. popular words until they were corrupted by those who won the revolution..

Look at our folks who are awaiting revolution(its a over-abused words in communist manifesto..as they are still waiting for it)-Karat, Jyothi basu( I respect him but he still was involved in election malpractices for years), Kerala communists and even Castro’s Cuba..

Compare this with sustainable change like Gandhi(freedom), Ambedkar or Periyar(dignity), Obama(gaining power from a position of slavery) or Algeria(winning vote to be free from french), Kurds(gaining free local elected bodies as first step in Iraq recently), Palestines(Obama has hoped that Israel would respect palestine as a separate state)

These are not mere words or icons or examples..they represent attitude, inclusive movement, connecting with outside world, multi-step process, Patience and fighting the battles in meeting rooms as much as in battle fields or more

I humbly think this approach has more sustainability than others..

    Regards,

  4. Dear Joy,

Hope you see the proposition am suggesting..Of course this is one way to approach things and not the only one..and am not arguing either..(honestly I’ve grown to dislike arguing..it leads to lot of ideas going nowhere)..Remove all the icons/examples (so that we are not swayed by them) and consider the path suggested..

The globe has become a village in many ways..specifically the global politics..And we live in times it is hard to settle a dispute with a neighbor without the support of the lender, oilman, farmer, manufacturer and service provider of this village..And it will become more so..

Of course the true backbone support is truth. which is very influential to all..except the oppressor in this case..

    Regards,

  5. I agree with Ronin! Cant agree more on the “..(honestly I’ve grown to dislike arguing..it leads to lot of ideas going nowhere)..” :)

  6. Great review! I liked the juxtaposition of Raa’ Pichai’s review in this post :-)
